The BIG oopsie of 2010

Just a quick note to say hello, wish everyone a Happy Valentine's day, which my friend Marie who is here visiting a Happy Birthday, and inform everyone that I am not good at Portuguese and I am a girl!

I ran out of gas, just about, today and the gas station on base was closed.  Marie and I decided to stop at the local gas station, which I have never used before.  I figured it would be easy.  Marie does speak some Portuguese, so no problem...right?...wrong!

FYI gasoleo is not gasoline!  Yes, I put 10 liters of diesel in my car today.  I managed to get it almost back to the base, but I had to leave it at a restaurant and take a cab home.  Since today is Sunday there was no place to help.  Ryan will help me take care of my mess in the morning, but if it can;t get fixed tomorrow we have to wait since Tuesday is a local holiday.

Yes, I am not the brightest crayon in the box.  Honestly, I think it was an easy mistake.

On the positive side, I got to see some of the local festivities for Carnaval here, which they do celebrate, just like in Brazil.  Lots of pretty costumes, singing and dancing.

My friend Marie did get her luggage back the following day after they lost it, and they did reimburse, so the airline paid for her souvenir tees.  We have done lots of fun and exciting things, and I will get posts and pictures up soon.  She is still here and there is still lots going on, including my car issue to deal with, but I promise I will give details as soon as I can.

Have a great night!

I saw this happen on The Amazing Race one season. Might be worse the other way around (regular gas in a diesel engine) but I could be wrong. Hope nothing is too messed up.

I would have made the same mistake since gasolina is gasoline in spanish lol

I hope your car is okay =)

It has got to be hard to be in a different place, not knowing the language. I remember it being so difficult not being able to speak very much italian in Italy.
Hope you two are having a good time!

Oh boy! That is something I would do, for sure! In this case, there's nothing to be embarrassed about though. Not knowing the language makes it tough to get what you need. Glad you made it home safe!

Have a great time with your friend!

Oh no!! My friend Sarah did that once back in high school, I laughed at her for days, but I won't do that to you :) It's different when you can't speak the language! IT made for a great memory for you and Marie to share forever. One of many I'm sure.

I hope you had a great VAlentine's day Melinda. Enjoy the rest of your time with Marie! And, no more random Portuguese gas stations!

Running out of gas...on carnival week, sounds like a sitcom to me! Sit back and enjoy the "ride" baby...and be glad they didn't ticket you!

Ohhhh, no, I'm so sorry to hear about your car! it's definitely an easy mistake to make, though - I've nearly put diesel in my car several times, and this was with everything in English! :-) Sending big good luck hugs and hoping your car is all better soon!

Sorry about the mix-up. I hope your car is going to be "back to normal" soon. I'm sure you'll get many good laughs out of this story down the road... :)

Awww, what a silly mistake. I can totally see myself doing something like that!

Sorry about the trouble it caused. At least the story made me smile!

Oh no! What a pain! But something that I totally would have done myself. In face, if we ever get a car here, I'm making a mental note to be very careful at the gas stations! From reading your next post, I'm glad to know that it's fixed now and working again. At least, we know for sure that you'll never make that mistake again! :)
