Healthy Eating Tips...

This past Tuesday, I was a presenter for a webinar through my employment as part of their campaign to help people get healthy.

My presentation was titled: Eating on the Stop and Go- Tips for Making the Best Food Choices While Working in the Virtual Environment

Since I work online almost full time, so do many of my coworkers, and of course the students, since I work for an online university.  I know that many of you also work in front of a computer all day, so these rules can apply too.  Many of them are designed to help when you work from home, but others are more general.  Hopefully, you are already doing some of these.  Following some simple guidelines can help keep you on the path to a long and healthy life.

-Most importantly, PLAN AHEAD!  Always have a game plan for healthy eating.

-Go grocery shopping with a list (part of the plan ahead rule), and do NOT go hungry.

-Prep foods on the weekend so they are easy and ready to go during the week.

-Start your day with breakfast.

-Keep a bottle of water by your work station.  Don't confuse thirst with hunger.

-Plan (again with the plan...) scheduled work breaks for snacks

-Have a separate place to eat, do NOT eat where you work.  These two activities should remain separate.

-Get the whole family on board.  This was no one can accidentally sabotage your plans for healthy living.  You are guaranteed the house will be stocked with healthy choices.

-Variety!  I can't say it enough.  All foods fit in a healthy diet when consumed in moderation, but without variety, something is bound to be forgotten.

-Make time (plan) for physical activity.

-Get up and stretch/walk around.  Do not sit for long periods of time.

Those are just some of my tips for working in the virtual world and sticking to healthy eating.  I also had a section on healthy eating when you are always on the run, and I will post some of those later.

QUESTION:  What are your healthy eating tips for people who working in the virtual environment?

UPDATE:  I know I just got back from vacation, but I am getting ready to travel again.  Not releasing any details just yet, but you can be sure that when I get home I will have tons of pictures of foods and sights.  I will try and schedule some posts during that time, but it is likely I will not post at all.  The same goes for leaving comments on everyone's great blogs.  I will try, but I am looking to rest and spend time seeing things and not staying up till all hours of the night blogging (although I do enjoy it!).

Good tips. Things changed a lot for me when I started working from home at the computer all day. Variety and a good workout is what works best for me. However, I do still eat at my work station. That is one thing I haven't been able to change.

Enjoy your trip! Looking forward to the photos!

Great tips! Since going back to school, I have spent a lot of time studying at home during the day. And soon I will be home with a new baby :) I follow most of those tips. I like the one about mistakening thirst for hunger....Very often, I am just thirsty!

You're seriously living the life, Melinda. How does a girl get so lucky to travel so much? Enjoy yourself!

And great tips, except I break most of them...eek! Esp eating while working and skipping breakfast...can't seem to break that habit!

I like your tips! I think planning ahead is really important, as is planning time for activity.

I also love having my computer on a stand to prevent neck/back problems. :-)

Hope you have a great vacation!

These are great tips, Melinda. I especially like the one about eating breakfast - so important to start the day right! I have to admit that I've never been good about keeping my eating area and my work area separate, because I sometimes eat lunch while I'm working. Not good, I know!

Have a great time on your travels! I can't wait to see your pictures!
