Holiday Party

Last weekend was the holiday party for my work.  I work at the DoDDs school here at the base.  If you are not familiar with DoDDs, this is the Department of Defense Dependents Schools.  I am an AVID tutor, which I have mentioned before, but in case you don’t know what that is, I basically help out my students as they are taking their classes that will help them prepare for college.  Many of the students would not otherwise be on a college path without the support they receive from the AVID program.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  I was a tutor for the program last year, and have continued this year.  We have 29 students in our program, which is amazing because we have a very, very, very small school (I think the graduating class this year is only 8 students).  The students we have are 6-12th graders.  I tutor them in their classes, and also attend their classes to not only be up to date on what they are learning, but also to observe them in “action”.  I am also a substitute teacher at the school.  So, you can see that I spend a lot of time at the school and have gotten close with many of the teachers and other school employees.  As a result, we decided to go to my work holiday party this year (it was the same night as Ryan’s).  Plus, it was at the local golf course so we could not resist checking it out.

Here are some pictures from the party:

The camera was doing funny things while we were trying to take pictures so many of them are with us laughing.

Here is a group photo of many of my female coworkers.  They are a great group of ladies.  Our principal and vice principal are on the ends.

They had small round tables and ours ended up just being 2 couples.

We started off with some kind of soup, which was vegetarian, so I tried some.

Obviously it wouldn’t be a party without bread.

A little salad.

There were 2 courses.  the first was fish.  It came packaged up.

This was the inside.  This is veggies on top of fish on top of potatoes.  It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t spectacular either.

The second course was chicken.  This is Ryan’s plate…not mine!

Dessert was awesome.  This was a cake form of the muffins that are the specialty sweet of the island…the Dona Amelia cakes.  You have probably seen them on my blog a million times.  They are like a sweet spice cake.  This was delicious and a great way to end the evening.

Oh wait, this is how we ended the evening!  This is another type of coffee drink we get here, called a galao.

I had a good time at the party and it was nice to hang out with friends and celebrate.

QUESTIONS:  Have you been to any holiday parties this season?  What is your favorite holiday treat?

Your dress is beautiful! I love it when you show pictures of you and Ryan, you are such a cute couple ( I know that sounds so cliche, but I especially love this picture where you are both candidly laughing and look so happy!).

IT's funny how they made the fish look "Better" by wrapping it up to present it. Too bad it didn't taste that great. I haven't been to ONE holiday party, and I'm not too sad about that to be honest. I wish we were having one at work, but so far....no. I'm actually surprised!

What a nice night out! I haven't been to any holiday parties....I haven't really been out atvall without a baby in tow for 3 months. We'll get our fill of festivities this week when my husband's family visits for a pre-Christmas Christmas. Happy holidays! You and Ryan look lovely!

you look cute! my friend just told me she bought that same dress :) too funny!
Yes, we go to too many holiday parties! The most fun is picking outfits to wear to them all!
I love green casserole - LOL! Apparently Matt's mom is not making it this year, bummer! We are making sausage and rum-fruit-cake for her party :) Didn't you get us the sausage stuffer as a wedding gift? LOL!

Nice dress!

The dessert and coffee sound great!

We went to a holiday party last weekend, and I had some spiked eggnog. While eggnog isn't my favorite, I really enjoyed the small glass... :)

What a gorgeous dress...you look stunning! And I love your glasses!

I really need to try a galao looks because it looks phenomenal, as does the cake.

I hope you have a fantastic holiday season Melinda!

I love your dress! Sorry the fish was underwhelming, but glad the dessert made up for it! :D

I agree....your dress, you shine....you spirit....all feels merry and bright. I think the best treat for me is the sense of permission and "grace" that is around these few weeks. To eat something indulgent, stay up a little later, be more friendly or cheerful, or more forgiving....that's a treat! And buying myself stocking stuffers....
Plus, there is nothing better than RELISHING a candy cane
